Smokey Acres would like to extend a special thank you to Pet Supplies Plus for a recent donation of food and supplies!  As you can see by the photo below, we are fortunate for this generous gift.  Having enjoyed exceptional customer service during prior shopping trips to the Pet Supplies Plus South Lyon store, we were thrilled for an even more meaningful relationship with this organization.
As a non-profit specializing in sanctuary for immune compromised cats, Smokey Acres has some unique needs.  We benefit greatly from community support like the donation from Pet Supplies Plus which allows us to focus our remaining resources on the veterinary care necessary for our special population.  By reducing stress for our resident cats with enrichment activities such as toys and food puzzles like those featured below and pheromone products like Feliway, we improve overall health.  In addition, dental products like Science Diet Oral Care dry food reduce the chronic oral inflammation so common in cats with feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus.

Our builder is completing another site visit this month to begin finalizing our facility location so, that we can complete the permitting process.  The Smokey Acres facility will be built upon a 10 acre parcel near the home of our founder and president, Marcianne White.  Plans for the facility include outdoor space for each cat room.  We anticipate that the outdoor space will provide enrichment and keep our population happy.  Because our cats are immune compromised, keeping the stress levels low is critical to overall health.  We will have several different rooms so, that we can match veterinary needs and personalities for the most successful colonies.  We also plan to have a few smaller rooms so, that we can isolate as necessary when new cats arrive or actively sick cats can be monitored more closely.  We are very excited for this build.
