We are actively seeking sponsors as we operate 100% on donations and volunteers.
Susan and Dr. Paul Bloom
Susan and Dr. Paul Bloom met each other while students at Michigan State University (MSU) and immediately connected through a common love for animals. Susan grew up on a working farm in Dansville, Michigan while Paul was raised in the suburban setting of Oak Park. For both, animals were a daily part of childhood. They married while Paul was finishing veterinary college and have enjoyed a growing fur-family ever since.
In 1984, eight years after graduating from the College of Veterinary Medicine at MSU, Dr. Bloom founded Bloom Animal Hospital (BAH) in Livonia, Michigan. Dr. Bloom is a Diplomat of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners and was Michigan’s first full time private practitioner certified by the American College of Veterinary Dermatology. Besides treating patients at BAH, Dr. Bloom serves as adjunct professor in veterinary dermatology at his alma mater, lectures across the globe and enjoys hockey and horseback riding in his downtime.
For many years, Susan has managed home and farm including a menagerie of very fortunate animals. Although the exact number of “children” has changed over time, the Bloom family remains multi-species including horses, mini-donkeys, sheep, goats, dogs and cats. Susan also enjoys weaving, jewelry design, horseback riding and reading in her spare time.
Susan and Paul generously offered to build a facility for Smokey Acres so that we can more effectively care for our growing community of cats. We plan to begin construction in 2018 allowing us to better serve our feline and human community.
Pets Supplies Plus
Smokey Acres would like to extend a special thank you to Pet Supplies Plus for a recent donation of food and supplies! As you can see by the photo below, we are fortunate for this generous gift. Having enjoyed exceptional customer service during prior shopping trips to the Pet Supplies Plus South Lyon store, we were thrilled for an even more meaningful relationship with this organization.
As a non-profit specializing in sanctuary for immune compromised cats, Smokey Acres has some unique needs. We benefit greatly from community support like the donation from Pet Supplies Plus which allows us to focus our remaining resources on the veterinary care necessary for our special population. By reducing stress for our resident cats with enrichment activities such as toys and food puzzles like those featured below and pheromone products like Feliway, we improve overall health. In addition, dental products like Science Diet Oral Care dry food reduce the chronic oral inflammation so common in cats with feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus.
